Wrekin ECO Ultra water softener installed under a kitchen worktop

The best water softener for your home depends on three things: how many people live there, what boiler or hot water system you have, and how much space you have. For most UK homes a metered, low-salt softener such as the ECO Ultra is the right choice. Combi and unvented systems need a high-flow model, and homes without a power socket near the stopcock suit a non-electric twin tank such as the Kinetico Supersoft. On a well, borehole or spring supply, test the water first: softening is only one part of treating a private supply.

1. Size it to your household

A softener's resin volume decides how much water it can soften between regenerations. As a starting point:

  • 1–3 people: compact units with 4–10 litres of resin.
  • 4–6 people: mid-size units with 15–20 litres of resin.
  • 7+ people or very hard water: high-capacity or twin-tank systems.

Very hard water uses up capacity faster, so check your hardness first. Our water hardness guide shows you how, and our hardness test kits give you a reading at home.

2. Match it to your boiler or hot water system

System What you need Good options
Combi boiler A high-flow softener and fitting kit, so mains pressure isn't reduced ECO Ultra Combi, Kinetico Supersoft HF
Unvented cylinder (e.g. Megaflo) High flow to keep pressure up when several taps run at once ECO Ultra with 22mm kit, Kinetico Supersoft HF
Open vented / loft tank Lower flow demand; most softeners suit ECO Ultra, AUTO10T, Kinetico Supersoft HE

3. Best water softener for well water and private supplies

On a well, borehole or spring, a water softener only deals with hardness. It does not make the water safe to drink. Private supplies often carry iron, manganese, acidity or bacteria as well, and iron and manganese can foul softener resin. So the right system depends on what is in your water.

  1. Test the water first. A private supply lab test shows hardness, iron, manganese, pH, nitrate and bacteria in one report.
  2. Remove sediment, iron and manganese, and correct pH where the test shows a problem, using iron and manganese filters and pH correction.
  3. Soften next. A metered softener such as the ECO Ultra treats hardness efficiently once iron and pH are under control.
  4. Finish with UV disinfection. UV goes last in the line, so it treats clean, clear water. Our Wrekin SSi UV systems are sized by flow rate.

Our guide to how to purify well water walks through each step in detail. Send us your test results and we'll recommend a complete system.

4. Salt-based softener or salt-free conditioner?

A salt-based softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause limescale. A salt-free conditioner leaves those minerals in the water but changes how they behave, so less scale sticks to surfaces.

Salt-based softener Salt-free conditioner
Removes hardness minerals Yes No
Limescale protection Strongest – stops new scale forming Reduces scale build-up
Softer feel to water Yes No
Needs salt, drain and (usually) power Yes (Kinetico models need no power) No
Best for Hard water areas, protecting boilers and appliances Low maintenance, no drain available, rented homes

5. Features worth paying for

  • Metered control: regenerates only when you've used the water, saving salt and water compared with timed models.
  • Twin tank: one tank is always in service, so you have soft water even during regeneration.
  • Non-electric: runs on water pressure alone, useful where there's no socket near the stopcock.
  • Drinking water tap: lets you keep an unsoftened supply at the kitchen sink. See our drinking water taps.

Frequently asked questions

Most people can. Softening adds a small amount of sodium, so softened water isn't recommended for making up baby formula or for anyone advised to follow a low-sodium diet. Many households fit a separate drinking water tap at the kitchen sink for unsoftened water.

The main running cost is salt, and how much you use depends on your water hardness and household size. Metered and low-salt models like the ECO Ultra use noticeably less salt and water than older timed softeners.

Many confident DIYers do, using a fixing kit matched to their pipe size and boiler type. If you're in North Shropshire, the Wrekin Water team can install it for you.

Only if there's no power near where it will be fitted, or you prefer a system with no electrics. Non-electric twin-tank softeners like the Kinetico Supersoft cost more up front but run on water pressure alone and supply soft water around the clock.

A well-maintained softener typically lasts many years. Keeping it topped up with salt and replacing worn parts such as seals and injectors when needed keeps it running. Wrekin Water stocks spare parts for all major softener brands.
