Pyrolox Advantage is the newer and synthetic version of Pyrolox. The granular media has received a 12.5% manganese dioxide coating. In the world of manganese dioxide filter media it can be considered as a light-weight product. The manganese dioxide acts as a catalyst to oxidize, precipitate and remove different contaminants: iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide and in some specific cases arsenic. The media works at is best when it is continuously regenerated with chlorine, air, ozone or hydrogen peroxide.
| Bed Depth | 610 mm (min.) |
| Recommended Service Flow Rate | 5 - 30 |
| Recommended Backwash Flow Rate | 25 - 50 |
| Freeboard | 40% |
| Bulk Density | 1.33 kg/l |
High-Performance Media for Iron, Manganese & Arsenic Removal
Pyrolox® Advantage is a premium washed manganese dioxide filter media engineered for highly effective iron removal, manganese removal, and hydrogen sulphide reduction, with additional benefits for arsenic removal in properly designed systems. Supplied ready to use, this 18x44 grade, 25kg (½ cubic foot) bag is suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial water treatment applications.
Unlike standard manganese dioxide media, Pyrolox undergoes an advanced washing process, significantly reducing fines and turbidity. This ensures faster commissioning, cleaner start-up, and more reliable long-term performance.
How Pyrolox® Works
Pyrolox® is a naturally mined ore containing a high concentration of manganese dioxide (MnO₂). It acts as a powerful oxidation catalyst, instantly oxidising dissolved iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulphide when water comes into contact with the media.
Once oxidised, these contaminants are trapped within the filter bed and removed through periodic backwashing. In certain water conditions, pre-oxidation using air injection, chlorine, or potassium permanganate may be recommended to maximise performance.
Key Benefits of Pyrolox®
- Effective Iron Removal – Eliminates dissolved and oxidised iron
- Manganese Reduction – Handles higher manganese concentrations
- Hydrogen Sulphide Control – Removes rotten egg odours
- Arsenic Reduction – Supports arsenic removal in suitable system designs
- Washed Media – Reduced fines and turbidity for cleaner operation
- Long Service Life – Durable media with excellent catalytic activity
- Chemical-Free Operation – No continuous chemical regeneration required
Technical Specifications
- Media Type: Washed manganese dioxide
- Grade: 8 x 20
- Bag Size: 25 kg (½ cu ft)
- Colour: Dark brown / black
- Application: Pressure filters, backwashing systems
- Typical Uses: Iron, manganese, hydrogen sulphide, arsenic reduction
Typical Applications
- Private water supplies (wells, boreholes, springs)
- Residential iron and manganese filtration systems
- Commercial and light industrial water treatment
- Pre-treatment for UV, RO, and membrane systems
System Design Considerations
- Requires adequate backwash flow rates due to media density
- Pre-oxidation (air, chlorine, or potassium permanganate) may be required depending on raw water chemistry
- Best installed with professional sizing and water analysis
