Sediment is usually fine sand, silt, clay, rust or scale particles carried into your water from the source (mains pipework, a borehole, or a private well) or dislodged during nearby mains work. It's the most common water quality issue we see, and the one most likely to damage downstream equipment like pumps, valves, and UV lamps if it isn't filtered out first.

For heavy, variable sediment loads (typical of borehole or well water), spun-bonded and string wound depth filters generally handle the load better before clogging. For lighter, more consistent sediment (typical of mains water), a pleated cartridge gives higher flow and a sharper micron cut-off in a smaller cartridge. If your water fluctuates seasonally, a two-stage approach — coarse depth filter followed by a finer pleated polish — is common.

No. Sediment filters are mechanical filters designed to remove suspended solids only — they don't treat bacteria, chlorine, taste, odour or dissolved chemicals. For those, you'd add UV disinfection (bacteria) or a carbon filter (chlorine, taste, odour) downstream of the sediment stage.

If you don't have a water test, start coarse (20–50 micron) as a first-stage filter and see how quickly it loads up — a filter that clogs within days rather than weeks suggests you need an even coarser pre-filter, or a higher-capacity depth cartridge, ahead of it.
