It depends on your application: IX Cafe for espresso machines and grinders, IX Ice for flakers and cubers, IX Taste for general drinking-water points where scale isn't the main concern, IX Vend for high-volume vending machines, IX Steam for combi ovens, pasta cookers and boilers, IX Defend for particularly hard, mineral-heavy or corrosive water conditions, and IX PFAS where reducing forever chemicals from mains water is the priority. Across the range, Medium and Large share the same IX Variable Head and filtration media — the difference is cartridge size and rated litre capacity, so Large simply treats more water before a cartridge change is due. Exact capacities vary by model (for example IX Cafe Medium is rated 3,120 litres vs 5,733 litres Large, while IX PFAS Medium is rated 17,000 litres vs 30,000 litres Large), so check the individual product page for your model's figures.

Every IX Water filter uses an infinitely reusable casing and IX Variable Head — only the internal cartridge is ever exchanged. When a cartridge reaches its rated capacity, you send it back through IX Water's UK-based takeback scheme using a prepaid returns bag and QR code. The resin is regenerated, the cartridge is cleaned, inspected and refilled, then sent back out for reuse, rather than the whole unit being thrown away and replaced. (The exception is IX PFAS, where the PFAS-specific media itself is single-use, though the cartridge and head are still part of the same takeback process.)

Yes — the IX Variable Head has an adjustable bypass, and the correct setting depends on the model. IX Ice, IX Taste and IX Vend must have the bypass set to 0 so no hard, untreated water is dialled back into the supply. IX Cafe and IX Steam units should be flushed on bypass setting 1 during initial installation. Always follow the model-specific installation guidance, or ask us to confirm the right setting for your equipment and local water hardness.
