Frequently asked questions
String wound filters are ideal for high-turbidity water (like well or borehole supplies). Their "depth-loading" structure traps particles throughout the entire thickness of the filter, rather than just on the surface, which allows them to handle heavier sediment loads without clogging.
The choice depends on your objective. Use 20–50 microns for general whole-house sediment reduction. Use 1–5 microns if you are protecting sensitive equipment like a UV lamp or Reverse Osmosis membrane.
Both are depth filters, but they're wound differently. String wound cartridges are made by winding cotton or polypropylene yarn around a core in a controlled pattern, creating a graduated density that's coarser on the outside and finer near the core. Spun-bonded cartridges are made from continuous melt-blown fibres bonded together. In practice, string wound tends to hold slightly more sediment for very heavy, variable loads (like untreated borehole water), while spun-bonded gives a more consistent, uniform micron rating.
No — string wound cartridges are single-use, disposable filters. Because sediment is trapped throughout the depth of the wound fibre, they can't be effectively cleaned and reused; once flow drops or pressure differential rises, replace the cartridge.
Spectrum's SWP range is available in cotton and polypropylene yarn constructions. Polypropylene is the more common choice for general water filtration since it resists bacterial growth better than cotton, while cotton wound filters are sometimes preferred for oil and hydrocarbon absorption in industrial applications.
