Frequently asked questions

Purtrex is Veolia's 100% pure polypropylene sediment cartridge, produced using their patented melt blown microfiber technology. Rather than only trapping particles on the surface, it's a true depth filter — sediment is captured throughout the full structure of the cartridge, giving it a high dirt-holding capacity, longer service life and lower change-out frequency than a standard wound cartridge.

Purtrex is stocked across a wide spread: micron ratings from 1 through to 75 micron (1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75 depending on the specific product), and lengths from 4 7/8" up to 40", in both regular 2.5" and large 4.5" diameters. All are Double Open Ended (DOE) with a nominal 75% efficiency rating. Check the individual product page for the exact micron and length combination in stock.

Regular diameter Purtrex cartridges are 2.5" across and fit standard 10"/20"/30"/40" housings, typically flowing 15–60 LPM depending on length. Large diameter cartridges are 4.5" across, hold more media, and are rated for a higher flow rate (around 30 LPM at 20" length) — better suited to higher-demand commercial systems or where you want to extend the interval between cartridge changes.

Purtrex's melt blown depth construction is specifically designed for high dirt-holding capacity, so service life is longer than a standard wound cartridge of the same micron rating. Actual life depends on your water's sediment load and the micron rating chosen — finer ratings will generally need changing more often than coarse ones in the same water. As a general sign it's time to change, watch for a drop in flow rate or pressure, which indicates the cartridge has reached its dirt-holding capacity.

Yes — Purtrex cartridges are manufactured without binders, resins or additives, which makes them suitable for potable water applications as well as commercial and industrial process water. They're a sediment stage rather than a taste, odour, chlorine or bacteriological treatment, so for a complete drinking water setup they're typically used as a pre-filter ahead of a carbon filter and, where needed, UV disinfection.
