Both are melt blown polypropylene depth filters that trap sediment throughout the cartridge rather than just on the surface, but they're built differently. Purtrex uses Veolia's patented melt blown microfiber process with a nominal 75% efficiency rating, while Hytrex II uses thermally bonded microfibres for a slightly higher 80% efficiency rating. Hytrex is generally the step up in filtration consistency; Purtrex offers the widest range of micron ratings, lengths and diameters in the range.

The micron rating is the size of particle the filter is designed to capture — the lower the number, the finer the filtration. Coarse ratings (30–75 micron) suit first-stage sediment removal and protecting downstream equipment from heavy debris; mid ratings (10–20 micron) suit general whole-house filtration; fine ratings (1–5 micron) suit pre-filtration ahead of carbon filters, UV systems or reverse osmosis membranes, where fine sediment and turbidity need to be removed. Most of the range uses a Double Open Ended (DOE) design, available in regular 2.5" diameter (fitting standard 10", 20", 30" and 40" housings depending on cartridge length) or large diameter 4.5" (for large diameter housings). Match the length, diameter and end-cap type of your current cartridge to the product spec table before ordering — if you're not sure, send us a photo or the model number of your housing and we'll confirm compatibility.

Regular diameter cartridges are 2.5" across and fit standard housings; large diameter cartridges are 4.5" across, hold more filter media, and are rated for higher flow rates — typically 30 litres per minute at 20" length compared with 15 LPM for the equivalent regular diameter cartridge. Large diameter is worth considering for higher-demand commercial or whole-property systems where flow rate and service life matter more than housing size.

Both the Purtrex and Hytrex ranges are 100% pure polypropylene with no binders, resins or additives, which is what makes them suitable for potable water use as well as commercial and industrial process water. They're a sediment pre-filter rather than a taste, odour or bacteriological treatment stage though — for full drinking water quality most systems pair a sediment cartridge like these with a carbon filter and, where needed, UV disinfection downstream.
