Sediment filters only remove suspended solids. Carbon filters work by adsorption — contaminants like chlorine, chloramine, taste, odour, and many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) bind to the surface of the activated carbon as water passes through, which a purely mechanical sediment filter can't touch.

Carbon block is extruded activated carbon formed into a solid, dense cartridge, giving the tightest contact with water for maximum adsorption in a compact size. Carbon wrap combines a carbon-impregnated sheet around a depth-filter core, adding sediment capacity alongside carbon adsorption. Loose GAC media is used in larger vessels or refillable housings rather than cartridges, typically for higher-volume or bespoke installations.

Standard carbon filters remove chlorine well but are less effective against chloramine, which needs longer contact time or a catalytic/impregnated carbon variant to reduce reliably — check the specific product listing for chloramine-rated cartridges if that's what your supply uses.

Carbon's adsorption capacity is finite and doesn't give an obvious visual or flow-rate warning the way a sediment filter does, so replacement is generally time-based — commonly every 3-6 months for domestic use — rather than waiting for a change in taste or odour to tell you it's exhausted.

Standard carbon filters are not certified for bacteria removal and only remove some heavy metals incidentally — for bacterial safety you need UV disinfection, and for guaranteed heavy metal reduction you need media or cartridges specifically certified for that contaminant. Carbon's core strength is chlorine, taste, odour, and organic chemical reduction.
