The 1040769 is Autotrol's 3/4" male Noryl bypass manifold, the moulded body that houses the bypass spools and connects the control valve to your inlet and outlet pipework. Note that this manifold is supplied without tails, so you'll need your own or a matching pair to complete the connection. It's the part to replace when the manifold itself has cracked or when you're fitting a valve that's missing its manifold entirely.

Symptoms that mean you need this part
- The bypass manifold body is cracked or split, leaking at the inlet or outlet connection
- The bypass spools won't seal properly because the manifold housing is worn or scored inside
- You're installing a second-hand or reconditioned valve and the manifold is missing or damaged
- You're upgrading pipework and need a genuine-spec 3/4" Noryl manifold to match the rest of the installation
Why it fails / why it matters
The bypass manifold carries full mains pressure at all times and is the part you operate every time the softener needs to be switched to bypass for servicing, so its spools and housing see constant wear. Noryl resists the chlorine and mineral content of UK mains water well, but the manifold body can still crack from over-tightened tails, frost damage, or simply age, and once the housing is scored the bypass spools can no longer form a reliable seal. A cracked or worn manifold means either a leak at the valve base or a bypass that won't hold, and replacing the manifold is the only fix.

How to fit it
- Isolate the mains supply and drain down the pipework before starting work
- Remove your existing tails from the old bypass manifold, noting their orientation
- Undo the manifold from the base of the control valve, checking the o-rings and mounting clips as you go
- Fit the new 1040769 manifold to the valve base with fresh o-rings, seating it squarely
- Refit your tails to the new manifold, sealing the threads appropriately for a 3/4" male connection
- Restore the mains supply and check every joint on the manifold and tails for leaks before returning to service
