The riser tube is the central distributor pipe that runs down the middle of a water softener's resin tank, carrying softened water up to the control valve while the heavy-duty bottom screen stops resin beads being drawn up and lost into the valve or plumbing. This 13/16in diameter riser tube is sized to fit Clack valves with a 3/4in in/out distributor head as well as Autotrol 155 timeclock valves. A common search item for anyone rebuilding a tank after resin loss or a cracked riser, and stocked by WrekinWater.

Symptoms that mean you need this part
- Resin beads appearing in your tap water or at the outlet after regeneration
- A cracked, split or collapsed riser tube found when the valve is removed
- Rebuilding or re-medding a tank and needing a new centre tube and screen
- Reduced softening capacity caused by resin escaping into the plumbing
Why it fails / why it matters
The riser tube takes constant flow and pressure cycling every time the valve operates, and the bottom screen sits in direct contact with the resin bed, so both are prone to hairline cracking, screen splitting or thread wear over years of service. Once the screen fails, resin beads pass straight up into the valve body, causing gritty water, blocked injectors and a steady loss of softening capacity that no amount of extra salt will fix.
Why buy this from WrekinWater
WrekinWater has supplied genuine Pentair Fleck, Autotrol, Clack and Kinetico spares to more than 50,000 customers over the last 15 years, so getting the diameter and head compatibility right on a part like this - where a few millimetres of difference means it won't fit - is exactly the kind of detail its Bettisfield, Shropshire team checks before dispatch. Rated Excellent on Trustpilot, with the technical know-how on hand if you're not sure which head your softener uses.
How to fit it
- Isolate the softener and put the valve into bypass before starting work.
- Remove the control valve or distributor head from the top of the tank to expose the riser tube.
- Unscrew or lift the old riser and screen assembly out of the resin bed, taking care not to spill resin.
- Cut the new riser tube to length if required, ensuring it seats correctly in the head or bypass fitting.
- Fit the new bottom screen securely to the base of the riser before lowering it back into the tank.
- Refit the valve/head, take the softener off bypass and run a manual regeneration to check for leaks or resin carry-over.
