The O-ring at the quartz sleeve's end cap keeps the water chamber sealed while letting the sleeve be removed for cleaning or lamp changes. Sitting permanently in water next to a lamp that generates some heat, the rubber gradually hardens with age and loses the flexibility it needs to grip the end cap tightly. Once that happens, mains pressure works its way past the seal rather than staying contained in the housing.

How to replace it

1. Isolate the water supply and switch off power to the UV unit.
2. Undo the end cap retaining nut and withdraw the lamp.
3. Slide out the quartz sleeve and remove the old O-ring from the end cap.
4. Clean the sealing faces of the end cap and sleeve.
5. Lubricate the new O-rings with food-safe silicone grease and fit them in place.
6. Refit the sleeve and lamp, restore power and water, and check the end cap for leaks.
