Signs this seal needs replacing
- Water weeping from the joint where the housing bowl meets the head.
- The O-rings looking flattened, sticky, or cracked when the housing is opened.
- Needing to over-tighten the housing to stop it dripping.
- A noticeable drop in water pressure after the housing has been serviced.
The O-rings in a slimline housing allow the white sump to seal against the head under mains pressure. EPDM rubber is chosen for its resistance to water and disinfectants, but it still hardens and loses its grip over time, especially with repeated cartridge changes that disturb the seal.
WrekinWater has been fitting and supplying housings like this from its Bettisfield, Shropshire base for 15 years, and stocks the correct EPDM O-rings so you're not left guessing at a generic hardware-store size.
How to replace it
- Turn off the water supply and open a tap downstream to release pressure.
- Unscrew the housing sump from the head using a housing spanner.
- Remove both old O-rings from the head and sump grooves.
- Wipe the grooves clean and lightly grease the new O-rings with food-safe silicone grease.
- Fit the new O-rings, then reattach the sump to the head hand-tight plus a small turn.
- Turn the water back on and check both joints for leaks before use.
