This is a fully assembled 3/8" safety brine valve, fitted into the brine well of a water softener's salt tank as a direct alternative to the Schurz brine valve. WrekinWater supplies it ready-built so it can be dropped straight into the well without sourcing and assembling individual components. Its job is to guard the brine tank against overfilling if the main fill mechanism doesn't shut off as it should.

Compatible with Standard brine well tubes, as an alternative to Schurz valves
Function Float-operated overfill protection for the brine tank
Supplied as Fully assembled, ready to fit

Signs you need this part

  • The brine tank has overfilled or is close to overflowing during a fill cycle.
  • The existing safety valve's float is stuck, cracked or won't move freely.
  • Salt water is present above the normal working level in the brine well.
  • The original Schurz valve has failed or is no longer available to service.

The safety brine valve sits inside the brine well and uses a float to monitor the water level as the tank fills ahead of a regeneration. If the main fill valve on the control head sticks open or fails to shut off in time, this valve's float rises with the water and closes off the fill line before the tank can overflow onto the floor. Without a working safety valve, a stuck fill valve has nothing standing between it and a soaked utility room or garage, since the brine tank has no other overflow protection of its own.

WrekinWater is a family run company based in Bettisfield, Shropshire, that has served more than 50,000 customers over 15 years and builds this valve as a direct, assembled alternative where an original Schurz valve isn't available. Ordering from a UK team (Company No. 11000488) rated Excellent on Trustpilot means you get a ready-to-fit part rather than a kit of loose components to assemble yourself.

How to fit it

  1. Isolate the water supply to the softener and put the valve into bypass before starting.
  2. Lift the brine well tube out of the salt tank and drain any brine solution from it.
  3. Remove the old or faulty safety valve from the base of the well tube.
  4. Fit this assembled 3/8" safety valve into the same position on the well tube.
  5. Lower the well tube back into the brine tank, keeping it upright and centred.
  6. Restore the water supply, take the valve out of bypass, and run a manual fill to check the float operates and shuts off correctly.
