This is compressed tablet salt for topping up or refilling the brine tank on a water softener, supplied by WrekinWater as a set of 10 x 10kg bags (100kg in total). Tablet salt is formulated to dissolve evenly and resist the mushing and bridging that looser salt types can cause in the tank. Because of the weight of a full pack, this item is offered on local delivery only.

Signs you need to top up/replace this
- Hardness is creeping back into your water before the next scheduled regeneration.
- The salt in the brine tank has set into a damp, solid crust rather than staying loose.
- You lift the tank lid and find the salt level is low or the tank is running dry.
- Your softener's low-salt warning light or indicator has come on.
A water softener works by ion exchange: resin beads inside the vessel swap hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) for sodium as water passes through. That resin can only hold so many hardness ions before it needs regenerating, which is done by flushing it with a strong salt brine drawn from this tank. Without enough salt, or with salt that has clumped and stopped dissolving properly, the brine solution is too weak to fully recharge the resin, and softening performance drops off even though the unit is still running its normal cycles.

How to top up / replace it
- Lift the lid of the brine/salt tank.
- Check the current salt level before adding more.
- Add tablet salt gradually rather than tipping the whole bag in at once.
- Fill to the level recommended in your softener's manual, without overfilling.
- Never mix tablet salt with block or granular salt in the same tank.
- Leave the salt to settle for a few hours before the next regeneration.
