Get Started

Neutracalc is a calcite-based neutralising media supplied by WrekinWater in a 5L bucket, used to top up or recharge a pH-correcting filter on private or borehole supplies with naturally acidic water. Unlike an ion-exchange resin, calcite media works by gradually dissolving into the water as it passes through, which is why the bed level drops over time and needs replenishing.

Media type Calcite (calcium carbonate) neutralising media
Pack size 5L bucket
Function Raises pH and reduces corrosivity of acidic water
Typical use Neutralising filters on private/borehole supplies with low-pH water
Consumption Media dissolves gradually with use and needs periodic topping up

Signs you need to top up/replace this

  • Water tests show pH has drifted back down toward acidic levels.
  • Blue-green staining reappears on sanitaryware or copper pipework.
  • The media bed level in the filter has visibly dropped since it was last filled.
  • It's been a while since the media was last checked or topped up.

Calcite media neutralises acidic water by slowly dissolving as water flows through the bed, releasing calcium carbonate that raises the water's pH and makes it less corrosive to pipework and fittings. Because the media is consumed in this process rather than simply exchanging ions like a softener resin, the bed genuinely shrinks over time and needs periodic topping up; if it isn't, the water passing through reverts to its original low pH and corrosive tendency.

WrekinWater is a family run water treatment specialist based in Bettisfield, Shropshire, serving more than 50,000 customers over 15 years and rated Excellent on Trustpilot. We supply neutralising media in a practical, ready-to-use bucket size for straightforward top-ups.

How to top up / replace it

  1. Isolate the filter and relieve any pressure before opening it.
  2. Open the vessel lid and check the current media level.
  3. Add Neutracalc media to bring the bed back up to its correct working level, without overfilling.
  4. Avoid mixing Neutracalc with a different neutralising media type in the same vessel.
  5. Refit the lid and restore water supply to the filter.
  6. Allow the bed to settle and run to drain briefly before drawing water for use.

It depends on how acidic your water is and how much passes through the filter, but because the media dissolves with use, most systems need a top-up at least once or twice a year. Checking pH periodically is the best way to know for sure.

No, different neutralising media types shouldn't be mixed in the same vessel. Top up with the same media already in the filter.
