Filter Sand 1.2mm – 2.0mm: Coarsest-Grade Quartz Filter Media (25kg)

1.2mm–2.0mm is the coarsest of our four graded quartz filter sands, and typically forms a lower support layer in a multi-media filter bed — sitting above the gravel base and below the finer filtration sand grades, stopping the finer media above it from migrating down and blocking the underdrain. A pressurised sand filter is usually built up in layers, running from fine sand at the top through to coarse gravel as a support layer at the base; in between, one or two intermediate grades are common.

Supplied as naturally rounded, washed and graded silica quartz, this is the same DKI Quartz filter media used across UK water treatment and private water supply systems.

Why it matters

Without a correctly graded support layer, finer filter sand can gradually work its way down into the gravel and underdrain, reducing filtration performance and eventually damaging the strainers. This coarsest grade in our range is sized to sit between the gravel and the finer sand layers above it. Always check your filter system's own media schedule for the specified depth and layer order before ordering, since bed designs vary between manufacturers.
