Product Description

A860S is a macroporous strong basic anion exchange resin supplied in 25-litre bags, purpose-built for removing dissolved organics such as humic and fulvic acids, tannins and colour bodies that a standard gel resin would quickly foul. Its open-pore structure gives it the surface area needed to trap larger organic molecules while still exchanging chloride for the target anions, making it the resin of choice ahead of demineralisation trains treating coloured or organically loaded raw water. WrekinWater supplies A860S to engineers recharging anion vessels on commercial and industrial water treatment plant.

Technical specifications

Product Code A860S-25L
Resin Type Macroporous strong basic anion (SBA) exchange resin
Designed For Organics removal (humic/fulvic acids, tannins, colour)
Pack Size 25 litres
Typical Use Ahead of or within demineralisation trains treating organically loaded water
Regeneration Caustic (NaOH) or salt regeneration depending on system design

Symptoms that mean you need this part

  • Treated water colour, TOC or UV254 readings are creeping up between regenerations
  • Downstream cation or mixed-bed resin is fouling or losing capacity faster than expected, pointing to organic breakthrough upstream
  • The resin bed looks visibly stained, dark or coated with organic matter when the vessel is opened for inspection
  • Regeneration is no longer restoring capacity to the level it used to, even with correct caustic or salt dosing

Why it fails / why it matters

Organic matter in raw water, particularly humic and fulvic acids, binds strongly to standard gel-type anion resin and is difficult to fully strip out during a normal regeneration, so the resin's effective capacity falls cycle after cycle even though it looks intact. A860S is built as a macroporous resin specifically to resist this fouling, offering a larger internal surface area that both traps and releases organic material more readily during regeneration, but it still has a finite working life and will eventually need replacing once its organic-scavenging capacity is exhausted. Left too long, a fouled anion bed passes organics downstream, shortening the life of any mixed-bed or polishing resin that follows it.

Why buy this from WrekinWater

WrekinWater has supported commercial water treatment customers with the correct grade of ion exchange resin, not just generic softening media, for over 15 years from its Bettisfield, Shropshire base, alongside Pentair Fleck, Autotrol, Clack and Kinetico control hardware. With more than 50,000 customers served and an Excellent Trustpilot rating, WrekinWater is a dependable source for specialist resins like A860S when organic fouling is affecting a treatment train's performance.

How to fit it

  1. Isolate the vessel, relieve pressure and open the access point or manway to the resin bed
  2. Remove the existing resin and inspect it for staining, odour or a coated appearance consistent with organic fouling
  3. Check the distributor, underbedding and vessel internals for fouling or damage while the vessel is open
  4. Load the correct volume of A860S evenly into the vessel to restore the designed bed depth
  5. Backwash the bed to classify the resin and remove fines, then carry out an organic-strip regeneration per the resin manufacturer's guidance before returning to service
  6. Monitor treated water colour, TOC or UV254 after commissioning to confirm the new resin is performing as expected

It's a macroporous resin with an open-pore structure designed specifically to trap and release larger organic molecules like humic and fulvic acids, which a standard gel-type resin would quickly foul on.

Signs include rising colour, TOC or UV254 in treated water, a visibly stained or coated resin bed, and downstream cation or mixed-bed resin losing capacity faster than expected.
