The Autotrol 255-742 is a complete Logix timeclock control valve assembly for water softeners, supplied with transformer as a full replacement control head, and stocked by WrekinWater. It uses an electromechanical timeclock to trigger regeneration on a fixed schedule, a simple and robust control method fitted to a huge number of domestic and light commercial softeners built on the Autotrol 255 platform. This is the part to order when the existing valve, timer or drive mechanism has failed beyond economical repair and the whole control head needs replacing.

Symptoms that mean you need this part

  • The timeclock mechanism has stuck, slipped or stopped advancing through the regeneration stages reliably
  • The valve body is worn, cracked or leaking internally despite fitting new seals, spacers and piston kits
  • Repeated call-outs for the same softener are becoming uneconomical compared to a full valve replacement
  • You need a direct-fit replacement for an obsolete or discontinued 255 timeclock valve

Why it fails / why it matters

The 255-742's timeclock mechanism physically advances a cam through each stage of regeneration – backwash, brine draw, rinse and refill – at set intervals, driven by a small motor geared to the clock. When the clock mechanism wears, slips out of sync, or the valve body and piston beneath it have degraded to the point where seal kits no longer hold a reliable seal, the whole assembly becomes the more sensible replacement rather than sourcing and fitting individual worn parts. The 255-742 gives you a complete, pre-wired unit that fits straight onto the existing tank and bypass.

Why buy this from WrekinWater

WrekinWater has stocked Autotrol and Pentair Fleck control valves for installers and homeowners for over 15 years from its base in Bettisfield, Shropshire, and as a stockist of Pentair Fleck, Autotrol, Clack and Kinetico ranges can confirm this valve matches your existing tank and bypass before you commit to buying. With over 50,000 customers served and an Excellent rating on Trustpilot, it's a dependable source for a part that leaves your softener offline until it's fitted.

How to fit it

  1. Confirm the 255-742 matches your existing softener tank, bypass valve and riser tube, checking with WrekinWater if you're unsure
  2. Isolate the softener at the bypass and relieve system pressure before starting work
  3. Have a competent installer disconnect the old valve from the bypass, riser tube, drain line and brine line
  4. Fit the new 255-742 valve assembly onto the tank, aligning the riser tube correctly and reconnecting bypass, drain and brine lines
  5. Wire in the transformer and set the timeclock to the correct regeneration time and frequency for your household
  6. Restore the water supply, check every connection for leaks, and run a manual regeneration to confirm smooth operation

Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately we are unable to accept returns on our Water Softener Parts So please confirm the correct part is ordered. If you have any doubt please feel free to call us prior to purchase for confirmation.

A timeclock valve like the 255-742 regenerates on a fixed schedule regardless of water use, while a metered valve tracks actual consumption and regenerates only when needed, generally using less salt and water.

No, this version is supplied without the top screen or bezel, so reuse your existing cover or order one separately.

It involves disconnecting bypass, drain and brine pipework and wiring a transformer, so we recommend a competent installer confirm compatibility and carry out the changeover.
