Why it fails / why it matters

The internal seals in a bypass wear from repeated turning and constant mains pressure, and grit in the mains supply can pit the sealing faces over time so they no longer shut off cleanly. How to fit it

1. Shut off the incoming mains supply and relieve pressure.
2. Unclip the old bypass from the valve body — Clack bypasses are held on with two retaining clips rather than threaded.
3. Transfer or renew the O-rings on the connecting tails if you're reusing them.
4. Fit the new bypass assembly and refit the retaining clips, making sure they click fully home on both sides.
5. Restore water slowly and cycle the bypass fully between service and bypass a couple of times, checking the handle and both seams for leaks as you go.
