Typically every 5-10 years, or sooner if you notice water running continuously to drain, reduced softening performance, or visible leaks from the valve. A basic service kit covers the seals and spacers most likely to wear first.

Standard mechanical valves (like the basic 5600) use a timer-driven piston; electronic SXT/SE valves add a digital control board for metered regeneration and programmable settings. Parts aren't interchangeable between the two, so check which type your valve uses before ordering.

If your electronic valve's display is blank or unresponsive despite the power being on, the transformer is a common cause — check its voltage and VA rating (e.g. 24V 10VA or 24V 60VA) against your valve's original transformer before ordering a replacement.
